While my wife and I were on Oahu, we visited the USS Missouri.  This is the aft turret scrunched as far under as I could get, though I was only able to catch the edge of the lowest layer of the center gun.  For those not familiar with battleships, these guns fire a 16 inch diameter projectile weighing about what a VW bug does and throwing it over 20 miles.  There are 9 of them on the ship in 3 turrets.  The turrets rotate and go several decks down to provide for supplying the shells and powder.  They're pretty impressive pieces of machinery.

5D3, 28-70 f2.8L @ 30 mm, hand held, f/20, 1/200, iso 640, aperture priority, pattern metering.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Cloned out a couple of wires and lightened the sky a bit.  Full frame plus adding the wedges from a minor straightening (using content aware fill).

Comments and criticisms are always appreciated.

Thanks,

Dennis,
Thanks for sharing this shot.  You rekindle my memories of my visit to the Missouri and my voyage from Long Beach to San Diego on board the New Jersey.  Certainly any visit to Oahu is not complete  without a visit to this WWII veteran, which was the ship on which the Japanese surrender took place.

Absent having visited a battleship I cannot imagine if most people could have guessed the subject.

Dennis: a very interesting perspective indeed. At first I thought they might be flagpoles or smokestacks. What they are is even more impressive. Richard

When you stand at a certain spot where the "surrender" plaque is on the deck, you can then see the USS Arizona site.  Thus, by standing in one place you can see where WW2 started and where it ended.

Dennis, at first glimpse, I knew exactly that  these were battleship turrets. This perhaps because of visiting the same ships in Oahu and a few others.  Very creative in getting this perspecitive.
