My first encounter with these cute guys has been 1996 in Colorado. I was on business trip in Boulder and I found out that some prairie dogs have been living in some empty lots close to the hotel where I was staying. It was summer so I decided to have a look and try to photograph them since I found it interesting that they were living close to urban areas. The photo session lasted only a few minutes because some people got "nervous" that someone was "shooting" with a long lens close to their homes. I explained that my interest were the nice animals, but someone decide to call the police ...
Years later I have been in Tucson also for business and one day I decided to visit the "Sonoran Dessert Museum", a location that also National Geographic praises for their work ( as far I remember ). Actually I really find it very nice there, especially the area where they have the prairie dogs, since it offers very nice photographic opportunities and setups, without the risk of police

4 commentsVery nice shot--I like that you were able to get down and photograph the prairie dog from a very low angle. The BG is ideal and the colors are rich, but not overly saturated. The prairie dog looks fat and content and is a very cute animal. Well done and I'm glad that you weren't thrown in the local jail for a prairie dog picture
What a porker! I like the cute pose and how well the P-dog stands out from the nicely blurred background. I do find the OOF band along the bottom a bit distracting, but that can be very hard to avoid when shooting from such a low angle (even with a super telephoto lens).
Cheers...
