Broken Angel

Before such a thing as security was understood, Bonaventure Cemetery was subject to much vandalism. Many of the beautiful statues such as this one were vandalized and trashed. I can't understand it and don't condone it, but it happens. This one, standing next to Gracie's monument (a life size bust of a six year old child who died of pneumonia), has been sadly disfigured, its wings broken, fingers broken off, etc. The mind of someone of such a low and crude order that could do such a thing both saddens and enrages me.surprise

Thanks again for looking. I did this one in black and white, which suits my mind whenever I go near this and other desecrations.

Hi Phil,

The BW version of the posted image is awesome--lots of details and a wide range of tones with texture. I would go all BW for sure........................Jim

The sagging camellia someone placed in the hand kind of appealed to me, but you are right, Jim. I should have removed the camellia.laugh

Another fine composition, I looked at the other post first. The B&W conversions work very well for the subject mater. They really have the look of a very old image.

Very beautiful, thought provoking composition and capture Phil. The B&W definitely sets up the mood and tone of the photo, but, the red flower is a powerful addition. While I agree the the photo would work just as well as a full B&W photo, I feel the slight splash of the red camellia gives the photo a greater level of intensity and emotion. The gaze of the angel looking down, perhaps to that broken hand and crumpled flower, opens a whole range of thought and emotion encompassing things far beyond the range presented by a 'pure' B&W version. Just my thoughts and humble opinion.
