Northern Saw-whet Owl

I do a lot of volunteer work for an organization called the Center for Natural Lands Management (CNLM).  Saturday, they had a special morning program put on by a local wildlife rescue and rehabilitation group (For Heaven's Sake Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation) primarily on owls.  They brought eight species that for one reason or another can't be released back to the wild.

The presentation took place in the seed cleaning shed at CNLMs nursery, so the lighting was not good and the backgrounds are machinery and storage racks for tools, etc.  I couldn't use flash so dof is also very shallow, but I thought I'd post a couple of these anyhow.

5D3, 70-200 f/4 ISL @ 191 mm, hand held, f/4, 1/125, iso 3200, aperture priority, pattern metering, -1/3 EV.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Cropped to 4x5 aspect ratio from a vertical original (only the slightest of crops in the width direction).  Taken January 9th at 10:02 AM.

Your comments and criticisms are always appreciated.

Thanks,

Dennis,

a nice image to emphasize on the story, but also because some man made stuff is seen at the background. The eyes of these guys are really always very impressing and this image shows it ncely as well.

Technically great, well exposured and good sharpness.

Quite good for ISO 3200,  f/4  and 191mm at 1/125 sec! In fact, I think that not using flash, on top of giving you a more natural and even illumination, allowed you to get that huge dark eye (with ceiling light reflections?) that really catches one's attention.

Well done, Dennis.  You turned all those negatives in to a nice positive.  Great eyes and the background is out of focus enough to not be intrusive.
