Over The Dome

I made this image in early October and I have revised it countless times since, never being quite happy with it. I think I finally got it, but I have looked at it so many times, who knows?  If you have any thoughts or suggestions, they would be appreciated.

Please have a look at the larger detailed version. It does not translate well to small size.

I like these kind of images, Harley, where it's hard to tell when the land ends and the sky begins.  And what a sky, I'm guessing somewhere over Escalante. I know they are not for everyone, but I like the exploration and journey through the image.  Lots of middle gray but bumping up the whites in the sandstone would look out of place with weather like this.  The big sky makes it for me.  Nice work.

The landscape looks great, but the clouds are the stars of this photo! The dark and menacing clouds to the left, opposed to the small crack of blue sky penetrating the clouds on the right side. That is just sweet.

Its a beautiful image and as Roel states, the sky is the star of the show.  I want to see more delineation in the ground detail but I think that could be solved by viewing the image larger than I am currently able.

The sky is truly impressive here, overwhelming and oppressive. What I would try in processing if it were mine is to darken the land a bit more and maybe use some vignetting. I think the concept of having this sky would work better in a darker landscape. Just an idea to try...

Harley, the sky is really great and I like the composition, but I agree it must be seen large. My only suggestion would be to increase the contrast between the clouds and the sandstone, by making the latter a bit darker - I know, easier said than done - are they whitish Navajo sandstones?

Just dont think there is enough interest in here to keep my attention.  (even at small size).  Processing looks on though.

Harley, the details in the sky here are wonderful and the clouds seem to go on forever.  That small section of clear sky is an interesting visual surprise that adds nicely.  I'm enjoying the subtle tones in the ridge on the left and how different they are from the drama of the sky but finding that the brighter areas in the right half of the land feel more like sky.  That has me wondering how reduced contrast or toning down the highlights in those parts of the landscape would look.

Harley,

Ok, I'll be redundant here with any comments on the sky... but I don't think this has been mentioned yet about this terrific sky and clouds: And that is the sense of motion, or the feeling that I'm literally being pulled in to the scene.  Does anyone else get that feeling? Like another demension.   A great dynamic that really makes this one work for me.

I wouldn't change anything. The contrasts throughout looks good to me.

Not sure what you didn't like before. What I like most about this is the "Big" sky and the low cieling efffect the sweeping cloud cover provides. Nicely dramatic!

Harley,
Strong image. The clouds are tremendous and add a lot of drama. Good work.
