Ice Spear

A break from the ice bubble abstracts.  The same morning I got started with those, I noticed this plant stem with some really extravagent ice crystals built up on it.  It was just above the pond ice and the right tip enters the ice within the frame.  The bg is submerged vegetation.  I chose to leave the one little frost fragment on the ice rather than clone it.

5D3, 180mm f3.5 macro, tripod and cable release, f/25, 1/13, iso 200, aperture priority, pattern metering.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Cropped just a tad off the right side and from both top and bottom for the pano look.  Taken January 1st at 9:28 AM.

Your comments and criticisms are very much appreciated.

Thanks,

A worn-out bottlebrush? I'm fine with the frost fragment, and the subtle detail on the dark background also works for me. The one thing I might do different is leave a bit more of space on the top, i.e., less of a panoramic crop. But that is just a personal choice.

Excellent look and image at this frost covered stem, Dennis. To me, it looks like a feather. Very sharp with fine detail.

Nice detail in those crystals, sweet! The pano crop is not working for me unfortunately, I think I would prefer a crop from both the left and the right. Nevertheless a very nice capture, the crystals really stand out against the background.

Dennis, it appears you have had a very productive session with the ice of New Years.  Very creative series.  This one is different than the otheres but fascinating just the same.

Had some of these on my pond last week, Dennis, but I couldn't get a good clean look like you've got here.  The details in the crystals are excellent and your exposure looks good.  I think the pano crop works well.  It certainly mimics the shape of the subject.

Dennis, I think the comment about a bottle brush fits this one to a tee. It was what I thought of when I first looked. Nice work here.....laugh

Great detail in the crystals, Dennis.  I like the pano crop. It looks like a fish in the dark ocean.
