The Garden

I suppose I should emulate David and post one of the shots I took this morning, but I can't pass up posting one of our local birds harvesting our garden-one of my very favorite subjects.  In this case it's a Pine Siskin harvesting the seeds of an Anise Hyssop.  The bird's a trifle centered in this one, but I wanted to include the tip of the flower head.  I had to remove part of a rocosmia bloom and do a little reconstructive surgery in the upper left to make this work.

7D2, Sigma 150-600mm C @ 600mm, hand held, f/6.3, 1/500, iso 640, aperture priority, pattern metering.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Cropped to 15.2 Mpixels before resizing.  Taken July 24th at 3:27 pm, so it must have been mostly cloudy or hazed over from the fires on the other side of the Cascades.

I'd like to thank everyone for their comment and ibnsight this past year and wish you all a healthy and prosperous 2016 with lots of great light and cooperative subjects.

Wonderful light and color.  Anise hyssop is a nice garden plant and it makes good desserts also.  The colors go so well woth the Pine Siskin. This is a warm image.  Back to the cold tomorrow.

This is a great, tight look at this Siskin on a very interesting perch, Dennis.  Love the details in the bird and it's perch set off so well by the background flowers.  During rare, very cold snaps, we get Siskins mixing with the Goldfinches at our thistle feeder here in MD.

Hi Dennis,

The siskin looks very nice in this bed of anise hyssop.  Composition is fine.  I like the plant part in the beak  and am amazed that these siskins go for the tiniest of seeds. Well done........................Jim
