Hunk of Nepal

On my last visit to Nepal went to Chitwan Nat'l Park which is known for good sightings of Greater One-horned Rhino, though the park also has a healthy population of Tigers but sighting are rare. Anyway, the night before it was raining heavily and in the morning it was misty/foggy and instead of going for Jeep safari, I opted out to go for walking safari instead, wasn't too optimistic that I would get to photograph anything intresting until we came face to face with this handsome guy.

Really cool to see the head-on view here, Butch.

I'm not quite sure about the composition.  I don't mind going horizontal at all, but to me it looks like the rhino is kind of in no man's land.  Either centered or a bit more to the left in the frame, and possibly cropping out the water would make it more appealing to me.

The grass sticking out of the mouth makes this one for me, Butch.  Reminds me of the classical images of the American farmer with a piece of grass in his mouth.

Butch,

this is a good image of a seldom seen animal. I find that the weather conditions worked in favour of the image since it let it look more mystic, as it is this rare rhino species. I like also the alert pose of the ears facing towards the viewer. Technically it looks also very good. Well done.

From composition point of view I would tend to present this as a vertical crop, since I feel that that would focus the viewer even stronger to the main subject. On the other hand, for commercial usage an editor will have some nice options of cropping and editing and even a vertical crop would still allow enlargements up to 9" x 6" at 300dpi.

I am really drawn to those fuzzy edged ears and the face of expression with hanging stems of grass has a comical, friendly feel.  Detail is quite good and exposure of shadows and subject look spot on.  Only think I might consider would be alternate crop and my choice would be to see how it feels without the foreground water.

That's probably not an angle seen by many, so I'm glad you posted.  Very dramatic.  I'd try a vertical crop because the habitat doesn't vary much to either side.

Love the pose you got here Butch. I agree with others about trying another crop. Maybe a vertical as suggested?
