Winter Birch
by Nick Bristol
This picture was made at the same location of the one I posted as part of my November series about a month ago.
I went to this small grove of birch at first light and made this picture after a light coating of snow and frost. Thanks for any thoughts on it.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. Nick

13 commentsThis is fantastic! Order from chaos, I love it. In terms of color, contrast, etc. I think this is processed perfectly. Yes, you could easily go all the way b&w, but I really like the cooler undertones as well as the subtle inclusion of the brown leaves. I love this as is.
Ronald mentioned the vignetting so I thought I would make a small suggestion to make this even better (at least IMO.) I think the natural vignetting works beautifully with the starkness of the white birch. My suggestion would be to deal with the very small patches of snow in the LLC along the bottom - either clone or burn down a bit more; Same thing with the brighter small branches in the ULC. Neither one of these are image killers at all, but burning them down would help bring out the vignetting even more. And just looking at how this is laid out, my guess is that the background and bottom area are just naturally darker and no processing was needed for affect.
and it just doesn't matter, this is a wonderful, artistic image.

This is very nice. Those tilting birches reaching out to the right provide a strong design element.

Lon, I applied your suggestions to the large file and it was just enough to make it better! Thanks.
