Sundog and Snow Geese
by Jim Hansen
This was taken a few minutes after my last post, also at the Sacramento NWR. Sun had been down a few minutes and this sundog appeared right above it. While documenting the sunset and sundog, a flock of snow geese moved into the scene. I liked the combination of these elements. D800e, Tokina 16-28 2.8, 28mm, 1/125, f 20, ISO 800. Camera rested on noodle on vehicle window. I am sure I didn't need to stop down to f 20, but used ISO 800 to get enough shutter speed to stop the movement of the geese. All happened very quickly and not much time to make settings. Would appreciate any comments on this one. Thanks for all the encouraging comments on my previous sunset image.

8 commentsNice capture. Well composed given how quickly you needed to react. In my opinion the geese at the very top of the frame really make the image.
Great job capturing and including the geese. The sunset is beautiful of course, but the added dynamic with the geese really tops this off. Interesting too that the geese aren't in their typical V formation flying overhead. It's almost like they saw you and scattered, or were randomly coming in for landing. Their placement in the sky makes this different.
Processing, color, sat, all look great.
