Lagopus leucurus
Found in September at about the 10,000 foot level of 10,900 foot Bald Mountain in northern Utah. They would be all white this time of year.

Nice one!  I like the pose you caught them in.  Good detail and color.  Also like how your photo shows some of the habitat they are found in.  Thanks for sharing.

Excellent, Neil.  Great job getting both birds in crisp focus.  A sweet pose from the foreground bird.

This view does an excellent job of showing off the birds and how well they blend in with their habitat.  Getting both birds sharp is a fine bonus.  I like the extra interest and sense of habitat added by the grass seed heads.  After spending some time viewing, I'm thinking that cropping out those first 4 grass seed heads on the right improves the balance.

Always a great species to see and capture. You made excellent use of the opportunity. A strong image, and very good documentation the incredibly cryptic color patterns. Well done.
