Fungi

We have too many Douglas firs around here for our prairie, so over the years I've been girdling a number of them and leaving them as wildlife snags.  The decay fungi in one of the girdling cuts decided that this was an opportune time to send out their fruiting bodies.  I liked the contrast with the dark rain-covered trunk of the fir and the arrangement of the mushrooms.

5D3, Canon 180mm f3.5 macro, tripod and cable release, f/32, 4 seconds, iso 400, aperture priority, pattern metering, -1/3 stop compensation.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  A slight crop and just a touch of cleanup work.  Topaz Detail to increase detail and added saturation on the mushrooms.  A bit of warming in LR5 to reduce the blue cast.  Taken Friday at 8:26 am between rains.

Your comments are always very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Dennis: Love the contrasting color and textures of the mushrooms and the trunk. While you didn't mention it, it looks like you may have used a polarizer. A good choice if you did. Nice find and a fine capture. >=))>

No polarizer, Bill, but it probably would have been a good idea.

Good detail and comp, Dennis. Strong iterative (mostly) display of the smooth 'shrooms against the dark and textured bark. cool

A stark contrast that gives stregth to the photo and separate the single mushroom in the family. What do you think about a diagonal positioning of the family for a more dinamic composition? I like the image very much.

What an excellent find, Dennis - it looks like the fungi posed themselves for the photo !  The smoothness of the mushrooms, with their touches of texture, lets them stand out beautifully against the rugged backdrop of the trunk.
