A slight pause...

This is towards the end of an encounter with the Manchaton brothers who were feeding on a buffalo carcass taken down the previous night. This Lion was watching a Leopard who was just on the bondary hoping for any picking left when the two brothers left. The light by now had just began to rise over the hill, allowing for some half decent light to come into the 'bowl' where we were positioned. The light really illuminated the rib/carcass nicely.

Steve: this photo must be viewed large. The light illuminating the red of thecarcass and which also falls on the ears and eye of the lion makes the subject appear near 3D. Congrats! Richard

A powerful image well taken. The light is a large part of the strength as well as "nature red in tooth and claw". I do wish there was a bit less of the carcass and a bit more of the lion.cool

'I do wish there was a bit less of the carcass'

Phil, that's nature and it's a tough life in the bush, plus it's 'story telling' - sadly they don't package it up nicely like grocery stores. enlightened

Powerfully effective, with the vibrant red telling the story.  I think I would like it equally or even better without the kill at all (It would be altogether different) because the lighting on the lion is so good,  emphasizing the dappled setting and catching ears and eye so well.

I really like how the light illuminates the eye so bright in this Steve. It really makes you feel as though he is in deep thought about whatever it was that interrupted his meal. That same light also makes the red pop off the screen. Nice work.
