Mother and Calf

Bison has risen to be one of my favorite North American species. Photographed from the right angle they look like landscapes within landscapes. They project strength but also a peaceful aloofness and sometimes even a little tenderness can be glimpsed in their eyes (not in this case!). Here, I was photographing a mother and her calf in the Lamar valley of Yellowstone from some distance when they decided to move and pass quite close to me. I had been there fo quite a while and they were ignoring me by then. The calf was a little worried as they got closer but couldn't help to take a peak at me from behind mom. The calf's anxiety and my lying flat to take the shot got the mother's attention.

Canon 7D2, EF 70-200mm F/2.8 II @ 70mm

1/250s, F/5.6, ISO 250, Full Frame.

Cheers,

Hisham,

Hisham: I really like the perspective you were able to attain. The pose and the detail in the mother, particularly the mother's frozen breath are a real bonus. Very nicely done and best seen large. Richard

I like everything about this shot, Hisham!  The composition with the landscape background is perfect, The details in the bison are excellent (the large version is absolutely required viewing), the colors are very natural, their attention is clearly focused on you and the breath fog is a great bonus.  Killer capture devil

Hi Hisham, I like the low POV and the breath snoted out, conveys the cooler temperature. The Bison behind the rear legs are a bit unfortuante, any frames further on without them in the BKG? I could well be wrong, but the light looks very even, to me there might have been more shade/shadow on the LH side of the face on the may subjects??? Even with the 2.8 (which is a great lens) I still think ISO400 minimum just to raise the SS would have been better and without compromising IQ.

Mother and daughter bison are giving you some really good pose.  I like the calf's tongue and the mother's breath, as visual accents.  Total effect is nice.  I agree the background animals behind the legs is unfortunate.  Photographing bison against most backgrounds is tricky to get perfect exposure because they are such light "sponges' and most images require a bit of post processing tweaks to bring out detail while keeping the scene exposure natural. In snowy settings the problem is magnified.   Here I feel the overall exposure is slightly over-exposed, just a bit...perhaps less than 1/3 stop.  Although lighting is overcast, looking at detail of calf ear and top of mom's head I suspect strongest lighting is angling from somewhere behind.  So, I would further reduce the exposue on the cow's near and under side (you probably opened it up somehwhat) but not so much as to give up textural detail.  The distant trees feel washed out, which might be an effect of haze and/or fog, but I think some contrast there would feel more natural, too.

Hi Lon,
You're right that this was over-exposed in camera and that it is back-lit. I reduced the exposure and increased contrast in the BG. Steve, that should fix your concern also. No fames without the BG animals though.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Hisham.

The RP Hisham address the points raised IMHO, it has a nice feel overall now and a greater depth to the image.

One of the best winter bison images that I have seen.  Love the angle, eye contact with both subjects, frozen breath, and the awesome background.  Well done.

Hisham, I agree with all points and like the repost better. I also think the background animals were a bit unfortunate, but still love the image. nice work.
