Dolphin Reflection

Here's a couple of Pacific white-sided dolphins I photographed a few weeks ago in British Columbia. It was a rather dark, moody day with glassy water so that created some interesting effects. I feel I should have had the shutter speed up a bit more to further stop action on the dolphin's blow, but maybe it creates a nice feel of movement? I didn't want to push the ISO much more for fear of creating some noise. I added a vingette to the image to heighten the dark mood of the day.

Body: Pentax K5iis
Lens: Pentax DA* 60-250
60mm, ISO 800, f/4.0, 1/1250 sec.

This is so fine, as is. Love the dark background and the reflections. I don't think you need to worry about the dolphin's blow...everything is just perfect for my eye as it is.  Nice work.

Hey Katie,
This image has a very nice Artistic feel and the center composition works really well. The moody effects of the water and the almost monochrome overall appearance creates an other worldly impression that is very enjoyable viewing. I do believe if you had managed to capture the eye of the background Dolphin, it would have made the image even stronger.
Welcome to NPN and I am enjoying all your images so far of your very interesting work and travels. I also visited your Web-site and appreciate all the work and effort you have put into an on-line presence. I also use Zenfolio to host my web-site and keeping up with all the new features they are introducing takes a lot of effort to say the least. I would suggest that you convert to the large thumbnail format on your 'All Photographs' page to give it more impact to draw in viewers. You may also want to use more of the selling features that Zenfolio offers, they make it real easy and the partner photo labs are fantastic. I attended the Zenfolio training academy when it came to Atlanta and learned much from the very entertaining instructors. If you are interested,  HERE is the link to see the informative presentations made at the training seminars on getting the most out of your Zenfolio Web-Site.
Look'n forward to seeing more images of your photographic journeys . . .  laugh

Hi Mike!
Thanks for the comments and thanks for visiting my website and for the suggestions. It is greatly appreciated!
I love Zenfolio. The hosting service has treated me well. I am currently in the process of re-working my website to make it look more professional and eye-catching. I am also working on uploading large TIF files to the site so people are able to order prints of much larger size. It's all taking time and I'm waiting to post stuff for sale until I have everything squared away. I live in an area that only gets exasperatingly slow internet so uploading a 40MB TIF file sometimes takes 30 minutes. Talk about wanting to pull your hair out!

Thanks again!
Katie :)

Hi Katie,

I love photographing these guys - so fast, so sleek, and so entertaining. As one who appreciates high contrast shots I quite like where you took this shot in processing (though I'm not sure the vignette is really needed...but that's a personal preference issue more than anything).

My only "wishes" for this shot are things that were totally out of your control, such as the head of the dolphin on the right being slightly more out of the water. But in terms of your end on the shot - well done!

Cheers...

Brad

Stunning shot - love that reflection.  I just wish there was eye contact on the larger one in the background
