Miao People
by Richard Sandor
The Miao people are one of the 55 minority groups recognized in China. The majority of Miao live in southern China with Guizhou province holding about half of the 9.6 million estimated population. With the harvest done, Autumn is the time for festivals. The women wear ornate outer garments and head gear that is handed down generationn to generation. I took this photo in the home of the village head man (similar to a mayor). In it, you can see the women in their finery as well as the decor of the home. Very prominent are posters of Chairman Mao. The Miao people helped Mao escape from the Kuomintang by giving him food and guides. Olympus E-M1 and 12-40 lens at 12mm, 1/30, f/4, ISO 2000 and flash. Richard
