Orca Romp

This is a group of transient (mammal-feeding) orcas I photographed last year near Orcas Island, Washington. The family had just indulged in a seal snack. Often after this ecotype of orca feeds, they become very social and playful as you can see. It's always fun and surprising to watch their antics.

Great action image. You caught the peak action at the right time.

Of your 4 posts (all of which are excellent), I prefer this one. Keep them coming!  I looked at your website and also really like L-8 Wavewalker.

Classic pod behaviour image, Katie! I think you absolutely nailed all respects of this image, especially the composition. I think it could benefit from a very minor CCW rotation as the horizon (and orcas) is tilting slightly down to the right.

Hi Katie,

As one who has spent a lot of time with orcas, I can appreciate how challenging (and rare) it can be to get a shot like this of transients frolicking! Amazing animals and this shot nicely captures just how social and sentient they are - I have no doubt these guys were simply having fun!

Thanks for sharing this one...and well done.

Cheers...

Brad

It looks like a grand time was had by all enlightened  A fantastic opportunity and a great capture of it, Katie!   I like the composition with the horizon below center despite the dead space of the sky.  It provides a good sense of the vastness of the background.
