Cinematic

I apologize for my lack of participation in recent months.  I have been busy trying to learn the ropes of my new job since moving out to Nashville about a year ago and haven't had as much time as I would like to participate.

I have several images to process from recent trips to the Smokies, but for now I thought I would post this image from a trip to Dead Horse Point Sate Park outside of Moab, UT.

This was captured in early morning light.  There were clear blue skies so I cropped out the sky and elected for a panoramic format which to me gives this a cinematic feel.  I really liked the color in the soft early morning light.

As always all honest comments and critiques are welcome.

Also, PLEASE VIEW LARGE - the smaller version will appear to be too dark, but you can see detail in the larger version.

Capture Info:
50 mm
f16 @ 3 sec.
ISO 100

Processing Info:
Minimal RAW processing in ACR
TK's luminosity masks to target midtone, shadow and highlight contrast
TK's focused saturation and luminosity masks

This is a great look at Dead Horse Point.  Love the soft morning glow in the canyon.  I have a couple of small suggestions which might be small improvements.  The first is to crop just a hair more off the top to eliminate that lighter band along the top or burn it down a bit more.  Secondly, I think the magenta on the cliff bottom left is a little strong.  Just a slight desaturation would help.  Small nits on a great image.

Cinematic is a fitting title. This image conveys scale, well composed.

Nice light and depth, a fine look at a fine viewpoint. I would agree with Gary's crop suggestion. I thought of the crop as soon as I opened it.

Brian,

I think the quality of the soft light throughout is outstanding and really makes the image, especially in the larger view.  I wasn't there so it's hard to comment on the color, but given the light conditions, sure looks good to me.

At first I didn't see what the others were refering to regarding a crop.  I thought they were talking about the face of the large mesa up top, but it's not that.  It's just a sliver along the top that I think they mean to crop or burn down a bit.  Not a huge deal for me since I didn't pickup on it until someone else mentioned.

Wonderful landscape image.

Another vote for a somewhat tighter crop, that was also my first thought. Maybe also rotate the image slightly so that the horizontal lies at the top are parallel to the frame? Small nit though, this is very nice!

Big open canyons can be an enviromental challenge form air issues but the sharpness of the image has not been affected.  I like the tonality here.  I am ok either way with the crop suggestions.

Like the way you've chosen not to include the top of the canyon and sky.  Really emphasizes the layers and textures.

I have nothing bad to say about this one. You had much more favorable conditions than I did when I was there. cool

I think the crop is just fine as it is. A bit of burning of those light areas at the top would eliminate the eye grabbers there. I relly like the soft light and the quiet mood. Well done, Bryan, and it's nice to see you posting again!
