Red Shouldered Hawk

I was just returning from my morning walk around the neighborhood and spotted this guy in the tree across from my new home in FL. He seemed quite comfortable with my presence but nevertheless I used my old 600mm f4 AI lens to keep my distance. The white background is the neighbors house. Olympus EM1 with Nikon adapter. ISO 640, 1/400 sec at f5.6. Cropped slightly to straighten. Comments appreciated.

Nicely composed. Good pose and detail.  Perhaps a bit brighter?  Consider cloning out the three isolated moss strands at the top?

A Great shot of this Red Shouldered Hawk. I love the stare you captured, i like the eye catch light, prefectly focus, a crisp photo, well done

Very nice and crisp image, which I would consider to crop to a vertical, what will fit nicely to the pose and let you eliminate the moos at the left hand site.

Thanks for your comments. I've taken your suggestions and cropped the image and brightened it up a tad. I think this is a stronger image but somehow I miss the moss which gives the image a sense of place.

Ateve,
I would have left the crop as is, if I had been lucky enough to get it.
Perhaps just a tad warmer?

Great pose and perch, Steve.  I do wish you had a bit more room at the bottom for the virtual tail.  Also the point of focus seems to be about the bottom of the Hawk and as you go further up it becomes softer.  It's usually best to keep th efocus on the head or at least something in the same plane as the head if you can.

Thanks Jim. You'll probably see more from me now that I've moved to FL and living in a home with a lot less maintenance.

Hi Steve! Beautiful image here. I think you nailed it out of the gate on the original post...would hate to see the background mosses(?) cropped out for the sake a cleaner image, but that might be just me. I have to confess I did have the same thought as Dennis re a bit more space at the bottom for a "virutal tail," but if this is the very bottom of the limb on the two corners and showing more below would introduce the background into the corners, I think you chose wisely composed as presented. Nice one!
