Foggy Morning Hawk
by Dennis Plank
Or Foggy Morning at the Refuge, but that wouldn't fit. I couldn't get close enough for a decent portrait of this Red-tailed Hawk, but I liked the scene and the way it was framed by the branches, so I backed off on the zoom and composed it a few different ways. This was the widest and turned out to be my favorite. The only processing to the bg is noise reduction. I created a separate layer for the hawk, sharpened it and then pulled the right hand slider on a levels adjustment back to reduce the hazy look. I topped it off with a tad of extra saturation and vibrance. The intent was to jazz up the bird just enough to make it stand out a bit from the bg and draw the eye.
7Dii, Sigma 150-600mm contemporary at 275mm, hand held, f/5.6, 1/250, iso 1250, aperture priority, pattern metering. Processed in LR5 & CS6. Full frame.
I appreciate all the comments on the Herons and look forward to your input on this image.

This well composed image nicely portrays the dreary weather we've been experiencing here in the North-west lately. I like the natural frame of the branches around the hawk also. I would be tempted to try to brighten up everthing except the sky just a tad more.
