Sunset at The Wedge
by Patrick O'Healy
October 12, 2015 The Wedge is a famous surfing beach in Newport Beach. California. When surf is up, it typically has the biggest waves in Southern California. I was photographing surfers in fairly large surf and when the sun began to set got this photo. This board was in this position for hours. It's owner was in the water on another board. When he came up to retrieve this board, the board he was using was in two pieces. Nearly every time I photograph surfers at the wedge a board gets broken. It is a horrendous shore break where the waves crash onto the sand. I did not stage the photo. The board was there and I positioned myself to get the shot with the setting sun in the background. Since it seldom rains in Southern California, it was nice to see the rain over the Palos Verdes Peninsula in the background a few minutes earlier.
