Autumn Alcove

I've visited this somewhat hidden little alcove in the eastern region of Zion a few times before.  But this year I guess my timing was right because the autumn foliage at this spot was better than at any of those previous times and resulted in an appealing composition.

I like the contrast between the red and the yellow, but I would have liked to see more leaves on the left part. The comp feels a bit heavy on the right side, which disturbes the balance a bit for me. But I like it nevertheless!

Thanks Roel.  I tried framing some tighter compositions of just the trees on the right.  But through the lens this just looked too cluttered and chaotic to my eye.  I like this wider shot where more of the wall at the back of the alcove is visible because it portrays a better sense of the location and it seems less chaotic to me.  The top of the original full-frame image has been cropped for this 4x5 composition.  However, I also think that a vertical semi-panoramic crop of the right side would work nicely.

What a treat! The contrast between the fall colors and the sandstone is quite striking. I love the how having the trees on the right allows room to showcase the wall in the background, so that both can be enjoyed at the same time. The visual complexity offered by the wispy branches is another interesting element in this photograph.

Really well done, Jim.

The incredible gloom of the rocks together with the subtle foliage makes for an impressive composition to me.
