Portrait of a Young Ram
by John Launstein
As many of you know, I'm completely taken with bighorn sheep! It's hard not to get narrowly focused on the big rams at the expense of all the other important members of the species (just like it's hard to leave the big bull elk for younger males or cows and calves--probably true for lions and elephants and most species when you get right down to it I guess). I decided to make a commitment earlier this year that I would begin photographing all age classes and genders in the species I was pursuing, although I made no such commitment to end up with equal representation across the board. ;)
In any event, I tore myself away from the bigger rams recently when this handsome young fellow posed so elegantly for a high-key portrait. Hope you like him as much as I do...Josiah and I are hopeful we will meet him again in the years to come and see what good habitat and good genetics result in!
Thanks for your time and comments!

4 commentsLove the low angle and eye contact as they create a very intimate portrait. The variation is tones makes the B&W work really well.

I can see why you like this subject, very photogenic.

I like your approach of going after all age and sex classes...
This image "feels" almost like a "vintage" image one might see on the wall of an old outfitters lodge. Nice detail and I quite like the tonal range in the posted B&W version. Good job on the post-processing!
When I looked at the thumbnail it looked to me like there was perhaps a bit more room at the top of the image than suited my own taste (but hard to tell where the edge of the image is on the version above).
As always...looking forward to seeing more!
Cheers...
