Black-crowned Night-Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax)
Place: Water Ranch, Gilbert, AZ
Date: January 2, 2011, 9:20 am
Equipment: Nikon D200, Nikkor AF-S 300/2.8 & TC14E (1.4x), G1325, RRS BH-55, Sidekick
Exposure: ISO 400, aperture priority matrix metered,  1/320th @ f/11
Raw, PS CS3 on Mac, full frame

Another image rescued from the backlog. A tight composition this time to make up for the small-in-frame image of my last post that didn’t generate much response.

I like this for the limited tones and overall color harmony, showing how well these immature birds can blend into their surroundings. This was taken without the use of any blind; instead I relied upon the trailside bushes at the Water Ranch as well as a slow and quiet approach.

Larger version provided for critical viewing of image quality and detail. Honest critiques requested; all comments appreciated.

Very cool Richard. The large image shows fantastic detail. Effective stalking technique I would say too. Nice work! devil

Superb detail in the plumage, Richard, and the clarity of the eye is wonderful.  While it is a bit, tight, you placed the bird perfectly in the frame, so it still works very well for me.

An excellent take, Richard, the detail and lighting are hard to beat. The dark BG gives the impression that the photo was taken at night – so appropriate in this instance. You were indeed lucky in taking such a successful photo of this Night Heron in daylight hours.

Love these guys... The bird stands out nicely from the background. Well-exposed. Cheers, Hans
