The first light
by Giuseppe Guadagno
Took when the first ray of the sun stepped over the horison and runs for taking possession of the surface of the land while the night helds out in the shade.
A flower of tradescantia shot in the garden of our neighbors.

I had to think about it for a while before I commented because of the unconventional composition. At first I was thinking of suggesting that the subject be moved to the left, or at least cropping off a bit of the left side. But every time I tried to move the image around my screen, it seemed to lose something. That expanse of deep darkness on the left side is part of what commands my attention, so I would not want to lose it. The exquisite flower catches my attention, but then the darkness beckons me to look closer and deeper into the image, drawing me closer to see the fascinating details in the shadows.
I don't know all the "rules" of composition, but I know that this image will not let me ignore it. I think the most important rule is "If it looks good, it is good." And this is way better than just good.
