Here's one of my favorite shots from last week's hike. (See other views here and here.). This is sunrise from one of the cliffs on Giant's Nubble, an outcropping on the south side of Giant Mountain, one of the Adirondack High Peaks. The pond is called Giant's Washbowl, hidden from the valley below, because it sits atop high, vertical cliffs. It contains a rare native "heritage" strain of brook trout called the Windfall Pond strain. Not many anglers are willing to climb up a mile of boulder fields to fish there, so it is fairly safe from introduced baitfish and stocked non-native trout that often destroy native fish populations.

12 commentsWayne: you've captured a beautiful scene which is most impressive when viewed large. There are vibrant colors in the trees, layers and textures in the sky and foreground rocks as well as a sunlit patch. Congrats! Richard
This is spectacular, Wayne, especially the larger version. This will look great printed large and hung on a wall. How cool that the pond holds a heritage strain of trout.
DOUG: Thanks for noticing that faint halo on the left side. Getting the chance for sharp eyes like yours to evaluate an image is one of the best things about NPN! I missed it when I made this post because it's not noticeable in the full-size file (56 MP). When I looked closely, I could see that it was a natural atmospheric halo in the Raw file, and I made it more evident when I applies +16 Clarity in ACR. However, as you guessed, it was not really visible until I compressed the file for the Web. After this image gets automatically deleted next month I'll post the corrected version for my personal gallery, but it's such a small thing, I won't bother with a repost now.
