This guy perched on this stick for about 2 seconds and I was lucky enough to get the camera pointed that way and focus a split second before he left. Of course they are primarily ground feeders and, at least in my experience, don't perch off the ground very often. Wondering how the background works, which is primarily my planted azaleas. D800e, 300f4, 1.4tc, f7.1, 1/100, ISO 1000. Experimenting with flash, with this one set at -3.0 ev. Is the flash obvious or do I have it set too low?

8 commentsTack sharp where it counts, excellent exposure of those blacks Jim.
I especially like this pleasant complimentary setting, hard to get a shot like this.. they're always on the ground when I see em'
Well done!
I really like this image. It is very sharp and detailed. The light, color and dof are right on. I like how the red in the eye really stand out. He stands out from the backround well also.
Really nicely detailed and pin sharp. Pose adds as well ! Love it ! Hans
This a very sweet image Jim. The flash looks very natural to me. I'm not sure I would have noticed it if you hadn't noted it. Great pose and the background compliments the image imo. And then there is that eye! Well done on this quick shot!
Wonderful pose and great to get these out in the open, Jim. I've seen them perchup many times, but they don't stay there very long, as you noted. The bg works very well for me.
Jim, the lighting is just right—enough to get definition in the blacks but avoiding entirely the lack of shadows. The azalea bush is fine with me.
Very nice Towhee image Jim. These guys are almost always hanging out in thick brush and are not easy to get out in the open like this. I am sure you did have to react very quickly.
Details are excellent, nice pose too, great shot of the Towhee perched. Ray
