This pair of American White Pelicans put on a soaring exhibition for us at Malhuer NWR last week. I bleached out the sky a bit and moved the birds in the frame to give them more room to fly into. I didn't change their relative size in the frame as I wanted to give them lots of sky. Once again, this was bright sun, so the only images that worked were when they were backlit.
7Dii, Sigma 150-600 contemporary, at 600mm, f/7.1, 1/3200, iso 800 aperture priority, pattern metering, no compensation. Processed in LR5 & CS6. For repositioning, I just set the crop ratio to 4x6 and dragged the birds where I wanted them to be then used content aware fill to add the sky where I needed it.
Thanks for all the comments and help with the Cooper's Hawk and I look forward to your input on this one.
Thanks,

5 commentsNice job with the processing, Dennis. I like the sky and the lighting on the birds. The repositioned comp looks good to me, and I don't see any artifacts in the blue sky. Not an easy exposure to make. Plenty of shadow detail and nothing looks blow. Nice.
Your work on the composition turned out well. The wing detail and handling of the blacks and whites also turned out well.
Nice results given the light. New position in the frame works. Good job on the processing.
They are a lot of fun to watch them soaring around the sky. Well captured and processed Dennis.
Well seen and composed, Dennis. I like you use of the backlight.
