Took this in the fading light of evening, when much of the rose bush was in the shadows. I adjusted the white balance to suggest the cool of a coming night. Is there too much negative space? Too dark? Suggestions welcomed.

Lovely rose, Nancy Lea. Well exposed for the whites. The color balance is pretty cool, Nancy, but that's just a matter of personal preference. From a comp standpoint, I am bothered by the leaf on the left obstructing the rose, and the fact that the entire image is weighted toward the ULC with just a black bg everywhere else. I would have tried to put more space on the left to give the rose more room in the direction it is facing, and either moved the leaves out of the way and/or try to compose with leaves in the LRC for better balance.

Love the cool tones, Nancy - I think you've achieved the effect you wanted perfectly. I take Scott's point about the leaf in the corner, though my first reaction was to think that it presents a striking, if unorthodox, relationship with the rose centre. I definitely think it a good compositional experiment - somehow emphasising the straight edged, pillow-like petals which give the flower a slightly stiff look which is rather appealing ( if that makes any sense !! )

I like the rose and your choice of WB. The crenelated edge on the left side threw me for a bit until I realized it was the margin of a leaf. I don't know how you could have done better with it. It would have been awkward to lighten the leaf at all. Maybe b/w?

I love the whitish blue, Nancy Lea. That leaf on the left hand side, encroaching on the bloom bothers me.

Yes.. I can see the temperature dropping
Great exposure of those whites & F/9 worked out well.. For this closeup comp I might've had less space RT, more left?
Well done

Hi Nancy, love this rose shot - wonderful cool tones in the whites. I'm afraid for me the leave(s) doesn't belong in the shot (or I would have liked to have seen a few hints of leaf strucure behind the rose on the right hand size to even up the composition). Since you have an almost 'graphic' shot I would be tempted to have a look how the image works if you take some of the 'yellow' out of the shadow deep in the rose, which would move it away from a green colouration to a more 'blue' like shadow - not necessarily better but might be an interesting take ...
Cheers, Mark
