Kiholo Bay

After a fair amount of debate with myself, I opted to post this here in the Landscape gallery (this is where most of my participation has been in the past).  If anyone feels this is to far fetched to have it here, just let me know and I'll be happy to move it.

This animalscape was taken on the Big Island here in Hawaii, about one month ago.  This is a special location (especially at sunset), where we spotted easily fifty turtles swimming, or just lying around on the lava rock.  This particular fellow was happy to let me get close and take pictures, as he drifted in and out of sleep on the warm rocks.  Unfortunately, and do not ask what I was thinking), I totally forgot to take another exposure for the highlights, which you can see are blown out in some areas.  Even with that mistake, I still enjoyed this composition over the many others I took that evening.

Canon 60d 10-22mm @ 12mm

ISO 320 --- f/10 --- 1/80sec --- tripod --- no filters

Comments and critiques are always welcome!

I think this is very interesting and tells a great story. Aside from the overexposed top right corner, I think this looks real nice. You could experiment with different crops that remove the most obvious blown highlight and still retain a nice composition.

btw: That turtle reminds me of me before I have my first cup of morning Joe. enlightened

Nathan, this view emphasizes the napping turtle (love the streatched out pose) well while showing a lovely environment.  I'd suggest trying Harley's 10% clone approach (clone in some subtle color and texture using a very light, say 10% opacity brush, sometimes, I've found that going over things twice with the 10% brush gives me just enough texture) on the blown area along the right).

A great find, Nathan. I would try to tame some highlights on the turtle's neck and shell, and some of the sky on the right but a fantastic image all around.

Thanks for the comments.  I will play around with the clone tool, and the crop is a good idea as well; thanks!

Very nice, Nathan.  Very well seen and composed.  I was going to suggest the cloning thing, but Mark beat me to it. sad

Nathan, This is a great shot! The highlights have been mentioned and other than that I like this a lot. Nice work!

Woah way up on the rock.  Didnt know they did that.  Thought beach only.  Funny as I saw this after I posted mine.  Nice long walk to get to that part of the bay too.  Nice stuff :)

Fine shot.  Like the way the textures of the rocks and turtles legs echo each other.
