These Greater Hoopoe Lark lives in arid, hot desert or semi-desert condition. Its plumage is typically a pale sandy color, helping it to blend in its surroundings and to find one to photograph is like looking for a needle in haystack.

5 commentsGreat job locating this illusive guy Butch, even more impressive is capturing him with his even more camouflaged prey. I think your low perspective helps the subject stand out a bit from its surroundings too.
Excellent Work!
Great low angle, Butch and the composition is really nice. The plumage of the bird looks just a bit oversharpened to my eye yielding a slightly crinkly look.
Just curious-is this grasshopper a very large species or the bird rather small?
First of all I love the colors (or lack of) in this image a lot. The species is great as well (where did you take it?), but the grasshopper is awesome ! Great shot ! I only photographed the species in very harsh light (at Cape Verde), but this is so much better ! Congrats !

Butch,
This looks like a substantial meal!
I agree with Dennis regarding the sharpening.
Any ideas as to where it got its name, as it bears no resemblance to any Hoopoe I have ever seen?
I love the low angle. The prey is as interesting as the bird. Nicely captured.
