One Autumn day in 2011 I returned to this old tree up in the Sonora Pass country of the Sierra. This is the interior of the tree, of which only a shell remains. Despite twisting the bellows of my view camera into a knot, I had to shoot this at f45 for depth of field. I really liked the warm colors and the various textures.

9 commentsBeautifully rendered with rich colors and rich tonality. Technically it's first class. To me, however, it feels a little busy. The knothole is a good center of focus but after that the eye starts to wander without any direction. Just a bit too much going on in my opinion. Masterfully done really.Love the range of warm tones going from cream to yellow to cinnamon.
There is a lot to see in this image but that is the case with textural images. They are abstact in some way but my eye is drawn towards the lighter hues in the center of the image. The larger format cameras do such a great job of reproducing tone gradations as you have done here.
This is beautiful, Preston. It seems to glow and the varied textures and forms are intriguing. I never get tired of tree bark! wonderful warm colors here, too.
Stunning colors and textures! A real pleasure to look at. I can just keep looking at this. So many nooks and crannies.Wouldn't change a thing, just love it.
Gorgeous textures and colors. I was gonna say this would make a great book jacket cover or screen saver, but it seems insulting. I would print it and hang it with pride.
Me too.....Excellent rendition of this old pine here, Preston. Good overall coverage with the LF unit also. I especially like the warmth of the colors, and of course the roughness of the all around textures in the bark. Nice work.....
Very well done, Preston. Nice semi-abstract. Great colors and shapes and textures. This should make a real nice print.
Paul and Marylynne,
This is not the tree's bark. This is the weathered wood inside of the hollowed out tree.
Harley, if memory serves, you, Lon, Dave Porter and myself photographed this tree on one one of our trips up to Sonora Pass. It's that snag at the St. Mary's Pass trailhead.
Thanks, for your comments, everyone!

Really nice color and texture. Simple but very engaging.
