Monarch on Zinnia

I was lucky to see three Monarchs flying around in a lovely colorful garden yesterday afternoon. This is one of the Monarchs feeding on a beautiful Zinnia.

Lovely monarch image, Barb. I like the beautful colors throughout the image. Excellent job managing the dof for both the BF and the bg. I do have a couple very minor suggestions that you might consider. First, if have not already done so, you might try burning the sunlit yellow center as well as the bright, lower part of the monarch's wing. Both areas are a bit bight due to the strong sun. The second minor suggestion would be to very slightly desaturated the vibrant red zinnia. It's a beautiful zinnia, but the monarch's the star here, and you you don't want the flower upstaging the star, IMO. I should add that I am viewing this and basing my suggestions on my very contrasty Imac monitor.  cryingdevil

Barb, what an excellent shot, DOF, sharpness, spot on!

I don't know if you did anything to the image once back on the computer screen, but I tend to agree that the Zinnia is quite bright! If those are the colors you saw when you took the shot, ignore what I just said.  When opportunity presents itself we MUST take the shot. I really like your take on the Monarch. Well done!

The colors throughout are spectacular, Barb.  Having the flower and the Monarch sharp works very well.

Great details seen in both flower and monarch, and I like the splashes of color BG Barb.

I might selectively reduce brightness in the lower part of the wing as Scott suggests.

Well done!devil

A perfect example of a new Monarch. No nits, Barb, except a minor issue of harsh light.cool

Lovely colourful image - zinnias really seem to attract butterflies. Good depth of field and the monarch looks very fresh. Graham

Hi Barb,

Looks like you handled the harsh lighting well.  I might try to reduce the red flower's saturation slightly as my only suggestion for improvement.  The monarch is perfectcrying............................Jim

Barb - Very vibrant and a terrific setting for the Monarch. Your plane of focus management is also excellent.

Hey Barb,
This image is sweet and looks just fine to me in all respects. It has a very artistic, painterly feel that works nicely IMO. This would make a great wall hanger.
Well done . . .  devil
