Took the boat out yesterday to photograph large birds, this is what I got. Would appreciate some ID help on this Butterfly.
Beached the boat on shore to eat sandwiches we had packed and two of these guys came flying in to use the same shoreline. They landed right at the waters edge next to the boat for a long drink of water and allowed me to get real close with no problem. Full frame, hand held in prone position half in and half out of the water. Was losing light and forced to use a narrow DOF while trying to keep shutter speed up to handle the windy conditions.

Mike, this is a Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glacus).  Here in the mid-Atlantic, late-July and early-August is prime time for them.  This is a fine look at this one, with excellent detail in the bf in an lovely setting with the warmly colored pebbles.  Yes, the trailing edges of the wings are getting soft, but the setting makes up for that nicely.

Excellent eye level profile image of this beautiful ST, Mike. Love the low, unobstructed view of the wings. Good job with the focal plane to get the body and nearly all of the wings sharp. The bg has attractive colors to complement the ST.

Haven't seen any tigers yet, but then I've limited my time outside with the "feels like" temps high (today's is 111)surprise

Great framing & POV, love the colors/patterns of the TS in this closeup Mike.

Nicely sharp detail where it must be, very nice!devil

Well caught on the Tiger, Mike. Your camera will handle ISO higher than 640. Next time bump it up to 800 or 1000 and spread the DOF.cool
