Yesterday was cloudy so the lighting was diffuse and almost too dark for macro work. This cooperative syrphid fly was nectaring on this sow thistle flower. I'd like a little more DOF, but I think the image works as is. K5 IIs 180mm f3.5 flash -3ev (1/200sec at f14, ISO 500) Exposure +1, saturation for yellows reduced, Topaz Detail, slight crop for comp............................Jim

5 commentsThe details in the fly as seen in the larger version are terrific Jim. The clarity and details in the top wing are especially attractive. It's interesting to me that in the 720px version the left eye seems to have moved, but the larger version shows that to be an illusion created by your ability to resolve all the fine hair that covers the eyes.
Hey Jim,
Excellent capture with nice detail and I like the vertical composition. The large version really shows the details and has better color than the small version. I would consider trying a Color Fade Correction to see how the results affect this image as it looks a bit flat on my monitor but just slightly (which could be my tired old eyes).
Well done . . .
Well composed and excellent detail in the close up of the fly, Jim. Just like Mark, I thought from the smaller version that maybe you missed detail. Must be some optical illusion or web thing because the detail in the larger version is excellent. I especially like the excellent capture of the structure of the right wing.
Lovely detail in the fly and the flash has worked very well. Dof is just right for me because the slight out of focus flower gives the image depth. Graham
Excellent details & I like the flies position in your frame Jim.
The LP's a real treat, especially the look at those wings..
