An extremely bright early spring day at Valdez, Alaska. This is a branch of the Lowe River that is muddy, deep and fast later in the summer. I would have preferred to have some clouds in the sky but there was enough going on with the bright sun and snow that it worked quite well without them. The difficult part was dealing with the extreme dynamic range without blowing out the highlights too badly.

The large image is worth viewing. It has much more presence.

6 commentsI really like the bits of debris and the reflections in the water. They create a strong near/far sense with the background peaks. You've handled the whites very well here, Gary. Yes, the larger view shows lots more details and dynamic range.
You dealt with the dynamic range beautifully. The large version is a must view. Like it a lot.
Hi Gary
I agree that the large version is worth viewing ....love the dynamic range of color and fine detail.

I really like the way the comp draws you through the image. Well done.
The large version is indeed a whole differnet picture than the small version, very nice. You handled the DR very well, looks very natural if you ask me, just as we would percieve the scene in real life. Might also make a nice B+W I think.
This is a beuatiful image Gary! Wonderful detail even throughout the whites. I love the snow-covered pieces of wood in the pond, and the reflection is excellent. The small image is very nice but the large image really grabs you with all the detail and the lovely composition. Well done!
