Above the Ice

I knew this view would be particularly suited for a BW conversion.  I was shooting with some strong backlighting, and this area of the Icelandic Highlands had muted colors .  Combined with the lighting the color version just wasn't one of the better ones.  The many ridges, curves, steaming vents and clouds improved after the conversion.  This was taken from a small Cessna plane, and I must say my body was more sore from bouncing from the seats from each side of the plane than after miles of hiking.  The amount of detail and sharpness is pretty impressive.  I shot at f8 figuring it was the sharpest aperture, but 5.6 maybe would have been just as sharp and I could have dropped the ISO.  I was concerned about sharpness and camera shake, so I was very conservative and erred on the side of sharp images.  If I am to do it all over again, I probably would sho0t at ISO 100 and 5.6.  All suggestions are welcome.

Large Version Included

Nikon 810, Nikon 24-120  ISO 400  1/8000 sec.

Very nice progression of ridgelines towards the lowerlands.  Nice gradations of grays. I would like to see a little more detail in the shadows but that may not have been your intention.  My 6 days last May seem hurried as I didn't make it to the highlands.  But there is so much to see there.  I wish to return and spend enough time to do it right.

Quite a plane ride, Harry.  Outstanding  B/W.........how could you go wrong.   I really like this with the sky cropped out, the real story is in the hills.  I would also clone the little snow patch btm left.  Really sweet as presented.

Great job, can't see anything wrong with this! Love those steaming vents in the distance.

Mesmerizing landscape in B+W, Harry. I've got to get there someday although I'll probably stay on the ground once I arrive ;-)

Great sense of seeing forever, real good depth. Good choice on the B&W. The image really works well for me.

I agree with Harley's comments. This seems to go on forever--ridge after ridge into the blue. I think B&W was good choice: The tones look quite nice.

Very nice tones and depth here.  The perspective is fabulous.  Did you use PS for your conversion or something else like NIk Silver Efex.

Marylynne- This was a simple conversion in PS with the slightest of blue toning.
