The recent Weekly Challenge for images of windmills and barns, sparked a memory of this windmill that I photographed during the winter of 2005. So, I found this in my archive, scanned it and worked up. I liked the color version, but decided to go with B&W, which I came to prefer over the color image.
This ranch in the Sierra Foothills is still active, so there were a few cows and horses wandering around. It was a nice day to be out and about in the hills near home.

6 commentsThis is nice Preston! I like the B&W conversion. I like the old implements and the horse around the windmill.
Hard to find one of these old Aermotor's that does not have some kind of bullet abuse of some sort. This one has a concentration of it in it's tail.
As alternatives to any standard landscape or closeup work over the years I've found these type of scenes very appealing to my own tastes in photographic work. This particular scene has it all with the portable livestock chute, a horse or tractor drawn hayrake, and of course the grazing horse. This would have made a perfect fit for the recent WC as mentioned, Preston. A nice B&W work up of this farm / ranch scene.
Nice little piece of rural magic, Preston. It works really well in B&W, giving it a historical look. Very nicely done.
Wonderful scene, Preston, perfect in B+W. Would have liked the horse to not be so obscured or with its head up but animals have minds of their own!
The large image has a lot of depth. The tonal range in BW is very nice. It just amazes me how nice a 4 X 5 image looks. I have an old 2 1/4 X 3 1/4 Speed Graphic and that still amazes me but 4 x 5 is a huge step up. This image is timeless.
Preston, i love this image. Great work!
