A bighorn ewe and two lambs pick their way along the base of the columnar basalt columns in the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. This was shot from across the canyon with the long lens. I think it only works because of the patterns created by those columns.

10 commentsA strong image. Difficult to tell much more without a larger image to look at.
A strong graphic image, unusual for a bighorn photo. How did you even spot them! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks guys. I've made an exception to my usual routine and posted a larger version here.

Max,
A very unusual composition, the textures in the rock are amazing., but I am not to sure whether the Bighorn add?
I reallly like this Max. I think the two lambs make this for me.
I like the bigger picture, context and textures here Max!
Hi Max,
Overall I like the composition and how you've split up the frame (and where you positioned the subjects), but I do agree with your comment about the vertical lines formed by the basalt columns being critical to its success. A bit of a shame that mom is in the middle of molting - for me that detracts a little from the shot (but obviously nothing at all you could have done about that).
Cheers...

I like this a lot Max, very graphic with the lines on the rock wall, well seen and composed
Large view is mandatory to appreciate the effect. Cool.
