When I was out a few days ago, a family of these were working their way through the shrubbery in front of me. This adult posed half in the sun for a few seconds, probably to distract my attention from a nearby juvenile.
7Dii, Sigma 150-600 contemporary at 562mm, hand held, f/6.3, 1/640, iso 640, aperture priority, center weighted average metering, -1/3 stop compensation (still blew out a thin reflection line along the beak). Processed in LR5 & CS6. Cropped to 11.3MP. Taken July 28th at 7:32 am.
I appreciate all the comments on the Buffet and look forward to your input on this image.

4 commentsNice look at this cool bird Dennis. I think you handled the exposure well considering the dynamic range you had to deal with.
Good considering the dynamic range. I noticed the thinness of the DOF at f/6.3. Good detail on the rest of the bird.
Dennis, be careful of the creep on this lens. It has a full lock at 150mm, but only temporary locks at the other indexed MM's. In between, there is no lock at all and it is easy to accidentally move it. Also (I found to my regret) it is relatively easy to mess up the OS. I cross threaded the UV filter, couldn't get it off. I put every ounce of flabby muscle I had trying to remove it, which blew the OS. So it is going back for warranty repair Monday!

Thanks for the warning, Phil. I knew about the creep, but the way I use it, it's not critical. I probably shouldhave been using a higher f-stop, but I'm still playing with it to see what kind of image quality I get at the extremes. Thus far I'm pretty satisfied.
Sorry to hear about your problem. I'll be extra careful about that.
Very nice light and shadow here Dennis. Not an easy shot to get, you've done well. Ray
