Tower Light (w/ repost)

Another telephoto shot from Murphy's Point in Canyonlands. I liked that the Candlestick Tower had first light while the cliff directly beyond it was in shadow. Mostly luck I will admit though enlightened

Very dramatic image, the larger image really shows the light beautifully on the tower. Nice detail on the cliff as well.

Dave, I like the light here and the depth of layers clear back to the distant lighter cliff area. I'm not sure where you'd shot this angle from, I've only been here once 20 years ago now, and what lens, but do wish to have possibly included the rest of the Candlestick formation base. But, not having much recall on the site maybe that was not an option at all. Regardless, as always, the southwestern terrain and formations seem to always make super landscape subjects.

Real nice light and a fine showcase of the formation. Nice take from Canyonlands.

What a nice and interesting structure! Very cool. Since the rock is the star of this image, I feel like I would have liked to see a bit more of the right part of it, but that's a small nit.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Here's the Candlestick with a bit more context... the base on the right side is more of a wall which connects to the Island in the Sky formation quite a bit further on. So the base isn't as neatly defined as it is on the left side. I included enough of that base wall to make for a symmetrical top layer with the Stick but I could see how viewers might want more.

Dave, thanks for taking time for the post of the wider view of the structure. The view is starting to come back to me now. The wide view is an interesting look at this neat formation also....

You hit the light just right in this image.  There is a sharpness to the foreground light and a sofness to the next several layers that really make this work.

Your first picture is certainly exceptional by the light and the projection of the tower on the wall. But, for me, the second one is the one I love. Two amazing pictures.

Dave, Funny how we (or maybe it's just me) think... I was enjoying the light, the interesting surroundings and the fine sense of depth, then I decided (who knows why) to scroll down.  There I see your second post and I really like that longer view with all the wonderfully gentle warmth both in the rocks and in the sky.

Another nice take from Island in the Sky.  I think I would burn the brighter areas slightly on everthing but the Candlestick.  I think that would help the main subject to stand out a little more.

I figured that some viewers might prefer the wider view to the original one I posted due to its nice warm sunrise light. Thanks for the comments to that effect. For me, the tower was the star of this location, indeed it is why we went there, so that is why the first post focused on that with a long lens.

I often find it difficult to determine which of my images from any given location is the most presentable for critique and comment. At a stunning location such as this, where I have camped for a sunset and subsequent sunrise, I will invariably have a half-dozen or so very different images that I really enjoy making and processing... what I might consider "NPN-worthy." Which one of them to post here is always a guess... the most dramatic, the best subject matter, the best light or layering, my favorite comp, wide angle, a telephoto, etc. In this case we also camped for another sunset and sunrise at a location on the opposite (north) side of the formation so I might have a dozen fairly good shots from here, at least in my opinion, but I am wary of over-posting.

One thing I did learn making images of the Candlestick Tower from the same level as its top is that if the sky beyond is drab or washed out then it is difficult to include the whole tower because it will project into that drab sky OR a pretty long lens will be needed to exclude the sky. That was the case on the first posting here.

Here's a re-post per Gary's suggestion for some burning of the background highlights.

Likely an improvement I think (unless I overdid it and they became a bit muddy.)

Dave, I like the far background in the repost, but now I think you need to bring up the higher values in the tower and cliff behind it.

You've had a nice series going from Utah!

Preston:  Wouldn't that be essentially the opposite of Gary's suggestion???

Dave, I wonder if the brightness of the face on the left of the Candlestick could be lowered a little to more match that on the right, since the brightess on the left draws my eye.
