I used some high-speed shooting to try & freeze the drops/movement, with a more distant group of flowers for background.
These are garden zinnias, and the water drops are from our garden sprinkler.
F/5.6, 1/3200th, ISO 400, 1D M3, 300mm f/2.8 + 1.4x & sunny/clear afternoon light @ 5:37pm. Monopod for support & shot in a vertical orientation.

9 commentsSounds (looks) like a fun shoot, Howard. A creative idea that looks very good here with the focus on the one sharp, colorful bloom and drops set off very well by the oof blooms and drops.
Colorful image! The water drops add the right touch. Nice technique to catch the drops. TFS.
Nicely done, Howard. Nice work to catch the sprinkler drops which really show up well. Gorgeous bg, too. Personally, I think I would crop the top 1/3 to just above where the drops become nice and sharp. I just like the balance with the top cropped, and I think there's still enough bg, but it's a fine image either way.

I probably agree with Scott in that I might have taken a bit more off the top, but that is very subjective. Technically superb, and in my opinion, the background makes this a very successful photo. Nice!
That's beautiful! Creative use of narrow DOF for the background flowers. Before reading your explanation I wondered whether this was rain and you were shooting through a window (something I do from my office when I get bored). But it's from a sprinkler -- even more difficult, I think.
Hi Howard
I read the fine print, and sprinklers are not allowed. just natural rain
Just kidding.

the water drops are captured perfectly'.. love the vibrant color and background

Hey Howard,
Second time is the charm and this is just as creative, perfectly executed and enjoyable to view as the first.
Congratulations on the WP . . .
Well taken, this is an enjoyable image! I just might try it myself. Thanks for sharing.
