Since I got back from the eagle trip, I've been going out to the garden in the mornings to see what I can find. On a couple of mornings I managed to have a little luck with the hummingbirds. Out of a two hour session, all my keepers on this particular morning were taken in a span of 1 minute and 4 seconds-patience is definitely a virtue in this hobby! The background is oof California Poppies and Clarkia unguiculata.
7Dii, 500mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC, Jobu Gimbal on RRS legs, f/6.3, 1/2000,, iso 1000, aperture priority, pattern metering, -2/3 stop compensation to avoid blowing out the whites around the neck, though in this case I ended up increasing exposure in processing. Processed in LR5 & CS6. Cropped to 13.7MP. Taken July 5th at 6:08 am.
I appreciate the comments on the Herring Gull image, and I look forward to your comments on this one.

7 commentsLovely image Dennis - nice pose and the BG colours are really interesting.
Wonder if it could be just a tad brighter?
In retrospect, Greg, I agree. I'd processed some other images from the same sequence and had added more exposure to them and preferred the result. Here's a repost.
Hi Dennis
I have spent as much time watching and work to get a nice shot of Humming birds and come a way with only few good shot. Nice work. I think the larger photograph shows the brightnest is correct. Nice work
Peter
Dennis, for me the larger version could not be better. Although I do not do anything other then landscape work with MF & LF gear, I'm a very big fan of ALL hummingbirds. This is truly gorgeous. The small catch light in the eye is excellent too.
Dennis, I must echo some of the other comments about the larger image. The brightness levels in the first post are just fine. The pattern of brightness changes between the smaller and larger images is somewhat of a concern to me, not only with you image but with many. I typically post a single 1200 pixel wide image. The site software compresses it down to 720? and in so doing there is a loos of brightness and color reproduction. BTW, I really like the catchlight in you shot.
Love the warm light/colors & wings forward pose Dennis, the LP looks just fantastic.
I lean towards the original brightness level.. Sweet shot, very well done

I like the position of the wings in this one Dennis. My first thought was it seems a bit under-exposed...but saw Greg mentioned and I like the repost much better. nice work!
