It was an excellent spring for great horned owls in Yellowstone. During the course of my six week trip, I had a number of sightings scattered throughout the region, including a couple of new nest sites. This was the most interesting site for me. This adult had an active nest in the middle of a wide swath of burned trees near Yellowstone Lake. One of my eagle-eyed clients was the first to spot it, which was quite a feat given how well the owl blends in with the surrounding gray trunks.
It was different from the usual green environment where one finds these owls in Yellowstone, and as a bonus it was at eye level across from an uphill road, so I really enjoyed visiting this spot over the last couple weeks of the trip.

Hi Max
As alway Owls are great to photograph. I would have like to see a large photo.

Very much without color. B/W would be a good choice but for the yellow eyes. The protective pattern, even the shadow, effectively hide the owl.
Perfect dof for this one, Max. I like the owl and tree being in excellent focus with that nice streaky bg.
