Silent City

A company function had me driving up to Salt Lake City this past weekend, so I stopped for a night at Bryce Canyon on the way back to Flagstaff.  I like how the walls in the Silent City area by Sunset Point seem to converge, so I chose a perch overlooking the area for sunset.  Unfortunately, the clouds did not light up colorfully, but was still happy to have clouds and the moon.

Well that's a great spot.  Not sure how I missed that one.  Nice find!

My favorite spot in Bryce also, Doug.  Love the Silent City and it's perfect for the wide angle view.  The large view is absolutely a must.  Very nice.

Yes, Doug, it's a terrific sky and the converging lines of hoodos roughly pointing to the moon provide a fine sense of zoom.  The extra details and, it seems, more dynamic range seen in the larger version are a terrific improvement.

Beautiful take on Bryce, Doug.  I agree about the converging line look. Works really well.

Your presented point of view makes it very clear what the area got its name from. Very nice landscape I must say! I think this works very well with the non-colored clouds that you have, puts all the more emphasis on those nice rock formations.

Thanks for the comments.  Does the white balance and brightness of the canyon look ok to you?

Large view is fantastic! I'm not sure about including the moon. It looks featureless anyway and the crop works better IMO

Great view and perspective Doug. Even though the sky wasn't what you hoped, a unique shot.  I think a BW conversion may take advantage of the interesting rock patterns and the sky might really pop.  Love it!

I really like how you've treated the colors and comp in this - the image has a peaceful and subtle beauty to it. The converging lines in the rocks work very well. I think you've got the warmth right on as well. Great job.

The convergence definitely draws me in.  Maybe wondering about digging more detail out of the darks to balance beter with the sky.

Great converging lines, Doug. I'm thinking this would also be a great place to shoot on a clear night.

Thanks for the additional suggestions.  Harry- thanks and a B&W has been done since.  Tony- I have selected the canyon and added a little brightness and contrast to try and make the tops of the "fins" stand out in a slightly brighter canyon. Hiilary- I was ready for the MW arching across, but it was a bright 3/4 moon all night.

Really nice spot to give a good perspective of Bryce.  I feel as if I could walk right in to the large view.

I like a lot this point of view, the convergence of the different elements and the light so the real colors can be seen without as the often over sursaturated red. As I never went there so I find very impressive the geometric shape of all those picks. I like the originality of this picture.

Very well done....perfect time for the photo, the star is a nice touch. I might lighten the FG just a tad.
