Crane Flies look like giant mosquitoes, but they aren't. They grow up to 2 1/2 inches long, with a wingspan of three inches. They are grayish-brown and slender. Their legs are super-thin and long.
Females have a sharp ovipositor on the tip of their abdomen (as seen here).
Shot this morning at first light on the dew soaked top edge of my truck bed.

4 commentsI know these little fellows, I know that they don't bite, but I did not know their name. I like the detail, especially on the dew drops, and how the black background makes the subject really stand out.
She looks weighed down by the dew here Howard. Neat catch with the backlit glow in her legs and all the dew. So now you're going to push "truck beds" as insect attractants for macro work.
Sweet cranefly, Howard. Love the dew drops. Hope all is well with you and your family. Seems like the rain gods are hitting you guys pretty good.
I'd say your eyes still have it, Howard. Precise focus and excellent detail. The dewdrops make the image. Excellent.
