Taken on May 24, 2015 on a day when it rained on the way to the reserve here in Southern California. Skies continued to be dark all morning, but we were able to find willing subjects like this Anna's Hummingbird. He landed repeatedly on this branch and perched for long periods of time. As he moved we caught glimpses of his luminescent feathers, but the angle to the sun had to be just right. This is one of hundreds of shots I took of him that morning. Persistence shooting is great, but luck is even better.

14 commentsGreat pose, Patrick. This really shows off that Gorget and the spread tail and agressive pose in general really make this one pop.
You have to see those guys with the sun at the right angle to believe them. Glad it happened for you. It sure pops.
Great detail and color. Your persistence paid off.
Flaring gorgets does require luck, but it also requires the skill to take advantage of the opportunity. Well done.
A stunning image Patrick
. Great pose and colors - against a pleasant background. Luck is something you deserve I assume ! Love it ! Hans
The litup gorget draws me right into the picture -- I like the curvy perch. Good job getting a catchlight on a straight on shot.
Super pose with the tail splayed and the gorget in full splendor Patrick.
Great image, Patrick.
Nice pose, perfect background.
Yes, persistence paid off! I think that the overcast sky may have actually worked very well too, to give a very pleasant illumination on the little dude.
Patrick,
Your persistance as certainly paid of here.
A perfect pose , the colours are stunning!
This is super sweet Patrick! Along with that beautiful gorget the hunnmmingbirds animated pose pushes this over the top.
Sweet One
I like the spread tail and the overcast sky really helped bring out the rich colors. Nice job Patrick.
Wow! Amazing color here Patrick. Love the headon shot, and the fiesty look in this little guy. Great one.
The colors really pop and I love the wing and tail spread. Excellent capture !
