There was an old discarded milk churn close to the nest site which this pair of little owls love to perch on and survey their territory. I just moved it a few meters so the hay bales acted as a nice backdrop to isolate the subject. The dark, vertical line on the RHS is the gap between the stack of bales. For me, it's important to use long lenes to provide a good comfort zone for the subjects and helps to build their confindence and puts no pressure on them, good practice in my book.
Since taking this a few weeks ago, the location has got really 'wild' and different, will post in due course, but the meadow is providing a really rich hunting grownd. Appologies in not been round just been really busy, mainly with these guys.

4 commentsLovely, Steve. The milk can makes a great perch and the haybales a wonderful bg.
I'm not usualy a fan of man-made perches, but this works very well. The side lighting is effective and lends a little drama. Nice shot.
Steve those bales in the Bg give a nice effect all making for a moody looking image, churn perch is great ,excellent piece of work.
Keith.
Like the background and bird detail looks great -- perch adds a comfortable, rural feeling for me
