Our resident gray squirrels dropped off a batch of young for weaning and they have been getting into a lot of trouble. They follow us around begging for food. I heard Tom the cat hissing and one was attempting to nurse. Tom never felt more humiliated by a rodent. Havoc our Bernese Mountain dog has been taking care of the ones that head into the backyard. He licks them until they are sopping wet. Robbie, one of our Newfoundlands alerted me to one that went into the garage. I'm hoping that these squirrels start to figure out that there are lots of things that can eat them. Luckily this one has figured out what squirrels are supposed to eat as he feasts beneath the bird feeder. We try to keep human contact to a bare minimum because baby squirrels are part of the natural world and need to learn to survive on their own. 6 commentsAn interesting back story and a decently taken post.
Thanks for posting this lovely image of the baby squirrel and the backgroud story. I love squirrels and therefor I am a bit envious of where you live. I always think it is quite an honor to be able to make such a close-up image of a wild animal. I really hope these youngsters will survive.
Very cute - both the picture and the story behind it

Jim, Cute story and photo.
Great detail and sharpness. Nice reflection in the eye.
Yep, they're so cute until they start burying pecans all over your yard which have to be dug up the next spring or you'll have a pecan tree for life.
