I took this image on my trip to the Sabyinyo group in Rwanda in 2011. This very friendly female came close enough for me to take this close-up of her lovely face. I converted the image to black and white, because there was so little color in the image anyway.

3 commentsIt must have been an amazing experience! Great job on this portait.
It is great that she allowed you to be near enough to capture this engaging portrait. I would enjoy seeing the color version to compare. Her stare (with nice reflectivity) coveys a strong sense of thoughtful intelligence. I wonder if this BW version loses a little detail in the bright areas of the nose that you would be able to retain with careful selective processing. In terms of composition, I think the tilted face, especially mouth-line, add much to the effectiveness of the capture.
Wow--that is quite the expression. I think your comp really works with this portrait, and love the black and white. I'm viewing this on my laptop, which should be outlawed probably, so take this with a grain of salt as they say, but I think it could benefit from deeper blacks. I agree with Lon's comments re intrigue from the mouth angle, and the graphic element it creates.
